 Mitaka is a city that offers a variety of appealing spots, from a world-famous museum to rich natural scenery.


Ghibli Museum, Mitaka

This is a popular museum where you can experience the world of Studio Ghibli.

  • Features: The museum, conceived by director Hayao Miyazaki, is a place for both children and adults to enjoy. There is no set route inside, allowing visitors to freely explore the exhibits, watch original short films, and buy limited-edition merchandise.

  • Important Note: Tickets are strictly by reservation only for a specific date and time. Tickets are not sold at the museum's front door. You must purchase them online or at a designated vendor in advance.

  • Access: It's about a 15-minute walk from JR Mitaka Station, or a 5-minute bus ride from the south exit of Mitaka Station.

Inokashira Park

This is a large metropolitan park that straddles the cities of Mitaka and Musashino.

  • Features: In the center of the park is Inokashira Pond, where you can go boating or simply enjoy a stroll. It is especially crowded with people during the cherry blossom season. The park also contains a zoo, an aquatic botanical garden, and the Benzaiten Shrine.

  • Access: It's about a 5-minute walk from JR Kichijoji Station or a 1-minute walk from Inokashira-koen Station on the Keio Inokashira Line.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Mitaka Campus

This is the central hub for astronomical research in Japan.

  • Features: The vast, green campus is home to historic buildings and observation instruments constructed during the Taisho era, allowing you to trace the history of astronomy. Some of the facilities are open to the public.

  • Access: You can take a bus from JR Mitaka Station.

  • Mitaka Yuzo Yamamoto Memorial Hall: The former residence of novelist and playwright Yuzo Yamamoto is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

  • Osamu Dazai Literary Salon: This salon exhibits materials related to the author Osamu Dazai, who spent his final years in Mitaka.
