The Sweet History of Fruit Sandwiches: A Japanese Delicacy
If you've ever scrolled through food Instagram, chances are you've stumbled upon the delightful and aesthetically pleasing fruit sandwich (フルーツサンド). With their vibrant cross-sections of fresh fruit nestled between fluffy white bread and creamy whipped cream, they're a treat for both the eyes and the palate. But where did this unique culinary creation come from?
Surprisingly, the fruit sandwich is a Japanese invention, with its origins tracing back to the Taisho and early Showa periods (roughly the 1910s to 1930s).
While the exact birthplace is a bit debated, several theories point to early fruit parlors. One popular belief credits Sembikiya in Tokyo, a renowned fruit specialist that opened its "Fruit Dining Hall" (later Sembikiya Fruit Parlor) in 1868.
